The law firm of Matt Cohen and Associates is a small civil rights practice concentrating in special education and school-related issues, the legal problems of mental health and human services providers, and the needs of children and adults with mental, developmental and physical disabilities.

Our services are provided through advocacy, informed and thoughtful consultation and representation in litigation and legislative and policy efforts. Many of our staff have personal experience in dealing with the challenges of people with disabilities through their own personal and family experiences. All of the staff bring a passion for justice and social change to their efforts, empathy for the challenges that our clients encounter and a commitment to excellence in the services we provide.

Success Stories

Secured reversal of district recommendation to move an elementary student from a primarily inclusive program to a self-contained program in another school further away and achieved additional support for student in existing placement. “Thanks so much for everything!” wrote the parent.

Secured continued placement in an inclusive classroom setting and appropriate evaluations for an 11-year-old girl with hearing impairment where the school district was attempting to move her to a segregated self-contained classroom. 

Secured continued placement at home school for an 11-year-old boy with autism where the school district was attempting to move him to a separate therapeutic day school.

Supported family to successfully advocate for a change in placement to a therapeutic day school for a young man with complex social, language, and learning needs.

Supported family to secure and support the transition to an appropriate therapeutic day school for a young, gifted boy with emotional regulation challenges.

Secured two years of placement at school district expense in a specialized program for children with learning disabilities in reading, as well as ongoing placement at the parents’ preferred public school for half the student’s day.
